Sukup Manufacturing names Tom Mangan CEO, its first non-family leader

After more than 60 years, Sukup Manufacturing Co. announced Monday will have its first CEO who is not a member of its namesake family.

Sukup, whose grain bins are a familiar part of Iowa’s landscape, chose Tom Mangan, who now serves as the Sheffield company’s chief financial officer, as its top leader. He will succeed Steve Sukup, who has served as president and CEO for the past five years.

Sukup will work alongside Mangan through October to “ensure a smooth transition and continued execution of the company’s strategic initiatives and corporate values,” the company, which also makes grain drying equipment, said in announcing its executive succession plan.

Sukup will transition to serving as chair of the company’s board, working with his brother, Charles, current board chair and former CEO. He will take over the chair duties full time in 2026.

“It’s been a privilege to lead the company to tremendous growth and success during a time of great change and uncertainty for our industry and the world,” Sukup said in a statement. “I have the utmost confidence in Tom and this great team that was assembled during my tenure. I am confident that the business is on the right path and in the right hands going forward.”

Mangan, who was also the company’s first non-family executive as CFO, “is a proven leader and an important part of Sukup Manufacturing Co. growing to a higher level in the past several years under Steve’s leadership,” Charles Sukup in said a statement.

An Iowa native, Mangan joined Sukup in April 2020. He leads the company’s finance, information technology and supply chain operations, the company said.

Charles Sukup said the company,, remains a “family-owned and operated company with three generations and nine family members” employed. His mother Mary, who founded the company in June 1963 with husband Eugene, remains on the staff. Eugene Sukup died in 2018.

Mangan, an Iowa State University grad who came to Sukup from an executive post at Boone-based Fareway Stores Inc., said in a statement he was honored to be chosen.

“It’s difficult to put into words how excited I am to be appointed as the next leader of Sukup Manufacturing Co. I am very appreciative for the trust the Sukup family has placed in me to lead our growing organization,” Mangan said “The strategic opportunities that lie ahead, combined with our talented team of employees and dealers, make this an exciting time to lead this company into the future.”

The third generation of family members who make up the executive team include Emily Schmitt, chief administrative officer, Matt Koch, chief marketing officer, and Chief Innovation Officer Hank Norem, who will assume the chief financial officer job.
