PointsBet appoints Andrew Catterall group CEO effective February 2026

PointsBet has announced a leadership transition that will elevate Andrew Catterall to group CEO in 2026 while retaining co-founder Sam Swanell in executive and advisory roles.

The Australian Securities Exchange-listed bookmaker said Catterall will assume the group chief executive role on February 1, 2026. Swanell, one of the company’s founders, will step aside from the CEO position but will remain with the business during and after the transition.

PointsBet said the succession plan was structured to provide continuity at the executive level. Swanell will continue as an executive director on the board and will also serve in an advisory capacity. The company said he will not leave the business following the handover.

The transition period extends through early 2026, allowing for an orderly transfer of responsibilities.

Catterall currently serves as CEO of PointsBet Australia, a position he has held since joining the company in 2022. In that role, he has overseen market operations and product delivery within Australia.

Before joining PointsBet, Catterall was CEO of Racing.com, where his work covered media, racing, and digital platforms.

Upon assuming the group CEO role, Catterall will oversee PointsBet’s operations in Australia and Canada. His responsibilities will include strategy execution, technology development, regulatory compliance, and customer growth across jurisdictions.

Founder involvement continues

Swanell co-founded PointsBet in March 2015 and has led the company through its early development, market entries, and public listing on the Australian Securities Exchange.

Despite stepping down from day-to-day executive leadership, Swanell’s continued participation at the board and advisory levels is intended to maintain institutional knowledge during the transition.

PointsBet Chairman Brett Paton acknowledged Swanell’s role in a company release issued Wednesday. Paton said Swanell guided the business through multiple stages of development and noted that his continued involvement will allow the company to draw on his experience during the leadership change.

The leadership announcement follows a change in ownership completed in October, when Japan-based technology group Mixi Inc., through its subsidiary Mixi Australia, gained control of PointsBet.

The off-market takeover resulted in Mixi holding 66.4% of the voting power in the wagering operator, altering the company’s ownership and governance structure.

PointsBet operates regulated wagering businesses in Australia and Canada, offering sports and racing betting services. The company also provides iGaming products where permitted by regulation.

Its wagering platform is cloud-based and supports consumer-facing betting services alongside internal operational systems across regulated markets.

PointsBet said it has not announced any immediate changes to its business strategy following the leadership update.
